After BRL 450 million in investments, Riocentro becomes the most complete and versatile convention center in Brazil

Managed by GL events, the venue attracts national and international events to Rio de Janeiro

The most complete event and convention center in Brazil, Riocentro is the only venue that brings together, in a single place, trade show pavilions, an amphitheater, a convention center, a 5-star hotel, a restaurant, TV studios and outdoor gardens. With a modern and versatile infrastructure, it is capable of hosting events of all sizes and shapes. Because of all this, it is the venue that most attracts national and international events to Rio de Janeiro throughout the year.

Riocentro underwent some massive transformations since the French multinational GL events — one of the world’s biggest event organizers — took over its management in 2006. Since then, the group has invested more than BRL 450 million to transform the area into a modern integrated event center, which hosts business and entertainment shows, conferences, corporate, cultural, social and sporting events, and concerts.

Because of its versatile structure and world-class management, Riocentro attracts the largest and most important business-to-business and business-to-consumer shows of Brazil and Latin America, such as LAAD Defence & Security — International Exhibition of Defence and Security; the International Book Fair of Rio de Janeiro, Rio Oil & Gas and the International Conference on Dentistry.

While renovation works progressed, GL events implemented a model of strategic management to constantly evolve in the offer of increasingly customized and complete services. The Riocentro team has a range of solutions that include a mix of product varieties to meet all customer demands.

The company’s team is focused on prospecting and bringing national and international events to Brazil. It has been successfully attracting events never before held in Rio de Janeiro, such as the Super Drift Brazil — Latin America’s biggest drift competition — and bringing back others that had left the city decades ago. An example is the Convention of the Brazilian Association of Supermarkets (Abras), the country’s largest industry. The event took place in São Paulo for 15 years and returned to Rio in 2017.

In Riocentro’s restructuring process, new business opportunities were developed, such as the lease of areas for TV studios, offices and a gym for both workers and visitors in the center.

Besides being an important tool to bring events to Rio de Janeiro, the center is part of the Brazilian history and its economic, political, cultural and sports life. It has staged some of the best international events held in the recent history of the country: Pan American Games 2007, the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, the 2014 World Cup, the World Youth Day and the Rio 2016 Olympics.

With all the investments made in the city for the Olympic Games, access to Riocentro has become easier and faster. The center is located in Barra da Tijuca and is easily accessible by car, taxi or public transport (underground train, bus and BRT). Just across from the event and convention center there is a BRT TransCarioca station, connecting the Galeão International Airport to the Alvorada Bus Terminal, named after the center itself.

Riocentro is 571,000-m² large, 98,000 m² of which are built-up areas — as big as the Leme suburb in Rio. It has four air-conditioned pavilions and the Integrated Convention Center (known as CINCO), a complex consisting of a convention center, a five-star hotel and Rio’s largest amphitheater, with 5,200 seats.

The convention center has a parking area with 7,000 parking spots, a multifunctional seminar room with capacity for 4,500 people, removable acoustic dividers, air-conditioned mezzanines, seminar rooms for 400 people, 16 modular meeting rooms with capacity for 270 people, VIP lounge, industrial kitchen, medical facilities, strategic security bureau and a heliport. It is the only center in Brazil that features underground tunnels connecting the pavilions, which makes it easy to handle operations during the events.

It also has a huge tropical garden with a lake and even a river flow, giving a special touch to the place. To further improve the visitors’ experience, GL events transformed the entrance area into an Art Pavilion, which holds Latin America’s largest indoor street art exhibition, and free artistic interventions and exhibitions available to all visitors.

Telecommunications station

One of the legacies of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games at Riocentro — which directly benefits its clients and visitors — is the Telecommunications Station. With state-of-the-art infrastructure, it provides data traffic security; quality and speedy connection, reducing the risk of downtimes; full wi-fi coverage in Pavilions 2, 3, 4 and 6, allowing people attending large events to connect to the internet at the same time; and free-of-charge national and international telecommunication services. With the Telecommunications Station, events and sports competitions can be safely broadcast live and simultaneously.

Five Star Hotel

Opened in 2014, the Grand Mercure Riocentro is a 5-star hotel with 306 rooms, a restaurant, a rooftop with a pool, fitness facilities and sauna rooms, as well as function rooms that can hold two thousand people. Located inside Riocentro, it hosts the visitors who are in Rio for business or entertainment. The restaurant is open to guests and attendees of trade fairs and conferences held at the convention center.
